Another way to play strong defense in any economic environment, especially a difficult one, is to make projects non-cancelable.
Think of short-duration projects where the objective is clear. In clinical research, this could be a protocol assessment. In health economics, a market sizing and valuation analysis. In manufacturing, a technical feasibility study.
Non-cancelable projects should be fixed price and paid in advance. No use having a non-cancelable project if it means you're later stuck doing the work for a customer behind on payments.
